The FYLI_NZES project successfully organised a two-day event series in the Municipality of Fyli on 30 June and 1 July 2026, providing an opportunity to present the project’s vision, objectives and progress, while encouraging dialogue on the transition towards more sustainable and energy-efficient communities.
Over the course of the two days, participants held stock of the project progress and planned activities, visited schools in the FYLI_NZES Investment Programme, and explored both the European policy landscape for energy-efficient buildings and the innovative approach of the FYLI_NZES project, highlighting its contribution to the development of climate-neutral communities.
Project Meeting
On the morning of 30 June 2026, ahead of the two-day event series, the FYLI_NZES consortium welcomed the FYLI_NZES Project Adviser, Ms. Paraskevi (Vivian) Dorizas, from CINEA, to the Technical Services Department of the Municipality of Fyli for a project progress meeting.
The meeting provided an opportunity to review the progress achieved so far, discuss the project’s ongoing activities and outline the next steps as FYLI_NZES enters its third and final year of implementation.
Following the meeting, the consortium visited the 3rd Kindergarten and 3rd Primary School of Zefyri, one of the buildings included in the FYLI_NZES Investment Programme. During the visit, the project team met with the school’s director and observed the current condition of the facilities, gaining valuable insight into the urgent need for energy efficiency interventions and the expected benefits that the upgrades will bring to the school.
FYLI_NZES Sustainable Energy Days event: Connecting FYLI_NZES with European Energy Policy
On Tuesday 30 June the event titled “FYLI_NZES: Accelerating Europe’s near-Zero Energy Schools’ Transition — From EU Policy to Local Implementation” was held under the Sustainable Energy Days initiative of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), focusing on the European policy framework for improving the energy performance of buildings.
The event opened with a presentation by the FYLI_NZES Project Adviser, Ms. Paraskevi (Vivian) Dorizas, who outlined the main features of European energy efficiency policies, with particular emphasis on provisions concerning buildings and the public sector. She also presented the LIFE Clean Energy Transition (LIFE CET) Programme, highlighting its role in supporting cities and regions in their transition towards clean energy.
Building on this policy perspective, Ms. Spyridoula Zachari, Special Advisor to the Mayor of Fyli, presented how the FYLI_NZES project aligns with the EU policy framework on energy efficiency in buildings. She also introduced the project’s innovative financing approach, explaining how the planned Energy Performance Contract (EPC) will support the implementation of the FYLI_NZES Investment Programme.
The discussions highlighted the importance of local action in achieving Europe’s broader climate and energy ambitions and demonstrated how projects such as FYLI_NZES can contribute to these goals. Ms Marianna Skolinou, Associate of MEP Dimitris Tsiodras, Mr. Athanassios Schizas, Vice-Mayor for Technical Services of the Municipality of Fyli, and Ms. Melina Lazaropoulou, Head of Advisory Unit and Partner at TREK Development S.A., shared insights on municipal energy efficiency efforts, innovation in building renovation and materials, as well as the expected impacts of the FYLI_NZES project in relation to EU energy policy objectives.
FYLI_NZES Project Conference: Exploring the FYLI_NZES Approach
The FYLI_NZES Project Conference, titled “Accelerating Energy Investments in Public Schools: The FYLI_NZES Project Approach“, was held on Wednesday 1 July and was dedicated to presenting the FYLI_NZES project in greater detail.
The session opened with a warm welcome by Mr. Christos Pappous, Mayor of Fyli, followed by a presentation from the FYLI_NZES Project Adviser, Ms. Vivian Dorizas, who outlined how the LIFE Clean Energy Transition (LIFE CET) Programme translates European energy policy into concrete action. She also highlighted the characteristics of the Project Development Assistance (PDA) strand, which supports the development and preparation of energy efficiency investments in buildings.
Building on this introduction, Ms. Spyridoula Zachari, Special Advisor to the Mayor of Fyli, presented the main features of the FYLI_NZES project, structured around its four key pillars.
Subsequently, Dr. Christos Tsanos, Senior Project Manager at TREK Development S.A., provided a deeper overview of the project’s innovative elements. These include the institutional and organisational innovation of the Project Development Unit (PDU), the methodological innovation of building aggregation (bundling) and the financial innovation of private financing through Energy Performance Contracting (EPC).
The panel discussion that followed focused on addressing questions from the audience regarding the implementation of EPCs in energy efficiency investments in public buildings, as well as the applicability of this model within the Municipality of Fyli. The discussion provided an opportunity to further explore practical aspects of project implementation and to exchange views on the challenges and opportunities associated with innovative financing mechanisms in the public sector.
